Day 14
Location: Alpas Island gun battery - A2
Today they almost missed the ferry thanks to a late start. Both Philip and Mitchell slept through the alarm thanks to the little pup they found last week. The little girl kept them up the night before. All she wanted to do was play. The poor boys couldn't sleep as she was either whining or racing around in circles. She didn't settle down until about three in the morning so understandably they wanted more sleep.
Stepping off the boat, Mitchell rubbed his tired eyes and yawned. “I'm so glad that dog is someone else's problem today.”
Philip followed suit, guiding Mistletoe onto the dock. “She's certainly a handful.”
“Well, I disavow her. She's your pup now,” he stifled another yawn. “Anyway, let's just get going. Maybe a walk will wake me up.”
“I was thinking we head up to one of the old gun batteries.”
“Ugh, but they're all up on the hills,” groaned the teen.
Philip grinned. “There's no better way to get the blood flowing than to go for a climb.”
“You climb then. I wanna sit on the horse.” He offered the older boy their dogs’ leashes.
“I guess that's fair,” he took them, handing over the reins. “Come on then, let's get moving. Those dogs won't find themselves.”
More awake by the time they arrived at the gun battery, Mitchell explored the old building with fascination. Like most boys his age, he was enraptured by the thought of this place being used during the war. Imaginings of fights and gun battles kept his attention for a lot of the time they were there.
Philip, on the other hand, just rested. Taking a nap or two, he caught up on some sleep, letting the dogs wander around on their own.Word count: 293
